The Donkey Sanctuary

Set along the historic Jurassic Coast and nestled in the tranquil East Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our working farm is home to donkeys, mules and hinnies - large and small. Come and say hello to some of the hundreds of donkeys waiting to meet you, completely free of charge. Explore our exciting new Visitor Centre, Understanding Donkeys Zone and Dr Svendsen’s Hut, and discover just why donkeys are so special. Also enjoy our scenic farm trails, guided tours, outdoor play area, Nature Centre and Maze. Head to the new Gift Shop for donkey-design items for every pocket. When it’s time to take a break, relax in our new family-friendly restaurant, The Kitchen and enjoy freshly prepared dishes using local, ethically sourced produce alongside stunning views over the donkeys paddocks out to the sea. The Donkey Sanctuary was founded as a charity in 1969, by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE. Open 365 days a year; entry and parking is free.

Norman Lockyer Observatory Sidmouth

Norman Lockyer Observatory is both a historical observatory and home to an active amateur astronomical society. It is a centre for amateur astronomy, meteorology, radio astronomy, and the promotion of science education. an Lockyer was a Victorian amateur astronomer, who discovered the element Helium in the Sun’s corona in 1868 and was one of the founders of the science journal Nature in 1869. He became the director of the Solar Physics Observatory at South Kensington and the first professor of astronomical physics in the Normal School of Science (now the Royal College of Science) in 1887. He was knighted in 1897.

After his retirement to Sidmouth, Lockyer obtained support in 1912 for the building of the Hill Observatory, renamed the Norman Lockyer Observatory following his death in 1920.

Alpaca Trekking with Bearhouse Alpacas Sidbury

Alpaca Trekking with Bearhouse Alpacas is a working alpaca stud farm not far from the seaside resort of Sidmouth. It is situated in the Roncombe Valley which is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As well as alpacas, there are angora goats, horses, ducks and geese, so there is plenty to see on your visit here. The staff can tell you all about alpacas and their amazing fleece and what they make with it. The wool, socks, bootliners, raw fleece etc can be bought at the farm and online through the link.

In the summer months you will be able to see very young cria (baby alpacas).

Alpaca trekking around the tracks and bridleways near the farm is a great way to spend an hour or two. These beautiful inquisitive animals are a pleasure to handle. The farm is a ten minute drive from Honiton or Sidmouth and there is plenty of parking.

World of Country Life Exmouth

World of Country Life is Devon's multi-award-winning whole family day out, whatever the weather! There are over 2 acres indoors with loads to do: crawl through the themed soft play areas, whizz round the mini electric go kart track, get up close to the animals in the nursery and petting centre, climb aboard the good ship Lady Suzannah in the pirate ship play area while mum and dad have a rest in the indoor beach hut, tuck into some tasty home cooked food in the farm themed restaurant. Watch the daily ferret racing show in the Barnyard Theatre, explore the past in the museum of farm machinery, take a trip down memory lane in the Victorian street, cruise around one of the south west's largest collection of vintage vehicles in the Hall of Transport (and see vehicles that have appeared on TV in Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge and Parades End) and view the famous Reg Imray motorcycle collection.

The fun doesn't stop indoors: there's plenty outside too! Hand feed the llama and deer on the Deer Train Safari, watch the daily falconry display from the fantastic Hawkridge Bird of Prey team, take a goat for a walk, shoot down the big blue slide or play a round of crazy golf-phew!
