Join us in Sidholme’s grand Music Room with its seven Osler glass chandeliers and recently restored Gothic-style Gray & Davison organ. Both are features of historical importance and during this event we celebrate the organ’s recent restoration with special musical performances in the evenings.

Friends of Sidholme Music Room

In 2013 a group of local volunteers came together to raise money to restore Sidholme’s 1855 Gray & Davison Organ, originally commissioned by the 6th Earl of Buckinghamshire. Following their success the committee have undertaken remedial work on the 1905 model B Bechstein grand piano, allowing the organ and piano to once again be played in tandem. The group is now focusing on the seven Osler glass chandeliers, installed in 1848 and originally gas fuelled, which are in urgent need of restoration to regain the original overhead lighting brilliance and the ambience of this magnificent room.

For more information of the events that the committee arrange and to support their projects, go to the Friends Of Sidholme Music Room Website

Expertly led by our Blue Badge Guide, we will learn everything about Sidmouth and Devon – from its historic natural landmarks to its unique blend of traditional and modern culture – and discover some of the county’s most fascinating sites.

Meet one of our guides....

Maeve Hamilton Hercod

“I have enjoyed living overseas for many years, but whenever I can I love to come back to Devon, the county of my birth. These days I am happily settled in Bath where I have family and work as a guide. My career has taken me from teaching to broadcasting to running sailing courses and many more mundane things along the way, so I hope that all this experience can help me to keep tours running smoothly.”

Your Holiday:

Day 1: 26 June – Across the Tamar: Moyclare, Liskeard and Tavistock

Today we head for Cornwall and Moyclare, a private garden which during the early days of gardening programmes was the most televised.  Today it’s an oasis of calm and colour, tended by the niece of the original owner.  We then take a scenic drive to Tavistock, famous for its Pannier Market and majestic parish church.

Day 2: 27 June – the Dorset Coast: the Abbotsbury Swannery and the Seaton tram

Abbotsbury’s Swannery was founded by the nearby Benedictine monastery and today still forms a refuge for the elegant birds.  On the way back to Sidmouth we take Seaton’s historic tram to visit the pretty seaside town.

Day 3: 28 June – The Exe Valley and Devon Coast

Killerton House was home to the Acland family before being given to the National Trust.  Today it’s known for its delightful gardens and collection of historic costumes.  From there we drive down the Exe valley before turning along the coast to delightful Budleigh Salterton home of writers and painters.

This is a great opportunity to improve your skills in relaxed company. Our expert tutor will guide you with techniques and ‘building blocks’ to help you create your own masterpieces over 5 days. Whether getting inspiration from the Jurassic Coast or the East Devon countryside you are sure to return home with beautiful paintings and great memories.

Places are limited on this break to allow our tutor to give you personalised suggestions based upon your level of experience. Please note: there may be some outdoor sessions, so please pack suitable clothing.

Meet one of our guides....

Anne Barnham

Anne was born in Carlisle and since then has moved around the country and abroad. She has a deep love of outdoor life so finally settled in Lincolnshire where “the great skies and distances are made for fresh and clear watercolour”.

Anne started painting about 4 years ago; landscapes with water appeal mostly but likes to have a building or structure of some kind to offset the gentleness of nature. Anne is an experienced teacher as she regularly teaches on cruise liners and will be guiding and assisting you in creating your own masterpiece.

The Holiday

This week will be an enjoyable time for new and established painters alike. Anne aims to help everyone to get the best out of painting outdoors, a new idea for some, and to show some ‘building block’ techniques that will help develop your own style.

On Sunday we will meet at 4pm to have tea and cake, and get to know one another. After dinner we will get together in our painting room and talk about what will happen in the week ahead, what each of you wants to gain from the week and any other points. There will be a short demonstration and answer any queries about the week ahead.

The days will begin after breakfast with approximately an hour in our painting room at the hotel to discuss any main points from the day’s venue. We will then go to our chosen place in as few cars as we can and paint most of the day. All the places that we have chosen will have parking, good views to paint, refreshments and toilets!

If the weather is not good we are able to paint in the hotel all day, I shall bring lots of reference photos that we can work from. The hotel is providing a large room for our use with tables and chairs and also tea/coffee and biscuits, morning and afternoon should we be indoors.

In the evenings there is some entertainment in the hotel which we are welcome to enjoy or you would be free to do your own thing. If anyone would like to have a break and explore during the day on their own, that is fine, we want the week to be fun and relaxed.

Anne will be painting in watercolour but please bring your usual painting equipment in whichever medium you use. After all, the principles are all the same. Don’t forget things like hats, camera, stool/chair, sun cream etc.

There will be various items for sale, paper, paints, brushes and all sorts of other bits and pieces in case you need any ‘top-ups’!

Your Holiday:

Day 1: 4 September – the English Riviera: Kents Cavern and Agatha Christie’s Torquay

One of the most important archaeological sites in NW Europe, the early occupants of Kents Cavern discovered - as did later English travellers - that Torquay has a delightful climate.  From here we go down towards the sea and follow in the footsteps of Agatha Christie who spent much of her life on the south Devon coast.

Day 3: 5 September – Athelhampton, Bridport and West Bay

Athelhampton House is a gem of medieval architecture with a wonderful topiary garden.  After time to explore we continue to nearby market town of Bridport and finish the day at West Bay where Broadchurch has been filmed.

Day 3: 6 September – Cotehele and Historic Plymouth

Hidden away on the Devon bank of the Tamar, Cotehele was home to the Mount Edgcombe family until they moved to nearby Plymouth.  After lunch we follow them there for a cruise of Plymouth

harbour and enjoy the historic Barbican and Hoe, from where Drake first sighted the Spanish Armada.
